Biography
Ted Smith, founder and retired chairman of FileNet Corporation, has been in the computer industry since 1960. After founding FileNet in 1982, Smith led the company as chairman and CEO until 1998 and continued as a member of the board of directors until the acquisition of the company by IBM in October 2006. Revenue for the year 2005 was $421 million. FileNet is the worldwide leader in document image processing, electronic document management and workflow software and has also become a major provider of software for enterprise Web Content Management and internet workflow applications.
Mr. Smith is Chairman and CEO of the Board of the MIND Research Institute, a non-profit research spin-off from the University of California, Irvine. MIND provides software for educational video games and music training for over 40,000 elementary school students in order to facilitate math learning and improved math test scores.
Mr. Smith was named Entrepreneur of the Year for Southern California by the Institute of American Entrepreneurs in 1987. In addition to FileNet, he is a member of the board of directors of Vue Technology, Inc., WebVisible, SeatAdvisor, Inc. and Apriso Corporation. He is also a former member of the Executive Council of the Technology Network, an industry political action group of 200 high-tech CEOs.
Mr. Smith is a past chair of the University of California, Irvine Foundation and chair of the Nomination and Board Development Committee. He served as chair of the Foundation from 2001 – 2005. He is a former chairman of the Chief Executive Roundtable at UCI. Mr. Smith and his wife, Janice, established the Ted and Janice Smith Dean’s Chair in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Science at UCI in 2001. He is a member of the Bren School of Information and Computer Science, Leadership Council. Mr. Smith received the UCI Medal in 2002. He is also a member of the board of visitors at the University Of Maryland College Of Engineering.
In 2004, Mr. Smith received the High-Tech Lifetime Achievement Award from the Orange County Council of the American Electronics Association.
Mr. Smith has a bachelor of science degree in engineering from the University of Maryland and did graduate work in computer science and business at UCLA.
